    Mmh, I still think "normal" proportional representation is better. In this system you still end up with only one candidate, and that means that some people might never see their #1 choice elected. It's better than FPTP though.

    And it seems like an iron-clad opinion poll. I can pick a minor candidate who exactly shares my viewpoint as choice #1. And that shows up in the officially counted results as what one voter really wants. And everyone who might agree with me sees how close we are to actually winning. And all the strategists see how many votes are out there for a given point of view. This would be way better than polling companies calling the 200 people who still have landlines, or however the heck it's done these days.

    What they are leaving out and what few people realize but what Congress itself published is that the house is run by one person, the Speaker of the House. The Senate is run by one person, the Senate Majority Leader. Those two pick the with a majority by their party on each committee, the committee chairs, the bills heard in the committees, And tell their party members how to vote. In other words, three people run our government, the president and those two. And they are told what to do by a political party who elected them, who in turn are controlled by the ultra wealthy political elite who fund the parties and the candidates. That is the root cause of the political divide and of most of our political problems, including the national debt. That is masked by everything they are talking about. There is only one solution that is practical, nonpartisan, and solves the root cause of control by the political parties and those who control them by changing two government processes to create the first realistic, scalable, direct democracy. Parts of it have been used around the world with great success in eliminating political division and producing better results. If you're interested, you can read the details and a plan to implement it here for free. EndPoliticsNow.com.

    This is incorrect - what is the difference with what we have now each district is made up of by a certain number of people. If you enlarge the district and have multiple representatives it breaks down to the same number of representatives Example if each district has 100,000 people with one representative. Then you enlarge the district to 600,000 with 6 representatives it’s still the same number of people The difference the people will not have one person to go to for help but multiple and end up getting no help. My town board is at large with 4 representatives you can complain or ask for help and nothing gets down. Towns with wards you have one representative and you can go to them for help. If they are bad at their job you can vote them out. With multiple representatives you never get rid of the bad apples. Rank choice voting is a better way to elect people to the office Fair districts it’s done already in many county, state and federal districts. 🤦🏻🤦🏻 unfortunately not all areas have it. We just need to implement it across the country for all positions As for contacting my representative I will tell them vote NO just for the reasons of enlarging districts with more representatives. It’s the dumbest part of this bill remove it and then it will pass

      if you actually read the bill it doesn't increase the number of members in the House of Representatives. Also, it would very much increase accountability as it would go a long way towards eliminating "safe seats"- for example Nancy Pelosi's seat (California's 11th district) was won with 84% of the vote, if she was part of a larger district it would make the election more competitive, thereby increasing accountability.

    What happens if a party gets lets say 10 electorate seats but gets 0 party votes. Wouldn't that overshoot the 120 seats in the parliament?

    • @snickers10m
      @snickers10m Месяц назад

      Great example! MMP is designed to be *more* proportional than traditional systems, but still not perfectly proportional! In your example, you're right that the 10/120 seats (8%) is greater than the party vote percentage (0%), so thankfully 48 of the 120 seats were reserved to help balance this by adding in MPs from other parties. In contrast, without MMP, imagine that only the 72 local electorate MPs would've been elected (no party MPs); that traditional system would have an even worse over-representation (10/72=14%) of this party! MMP and other proportional voting systems will naturally never reach perfect proportional representation - we compromise a little bit of error in order to still have local representatives that people feel best represent their specific region. (that is, you can vote for a candidate from your hometown that you trust, even if they aren't part of your favorite party. Two votes means both of your preferences will be represented in the government as fairly as possible)

    • @snickers10m
      @snickers10m Месяц назад

      For New Zealand in particular, they have a special rule for cases like this! The 10 seats in your example are called "overhang seats" (search this term on Wikipedia). New Zealand allows this party to keep the 10 seats, but since their party vote was low and should've earned them 0 seats, they add 10 more seats to parliament, chosen from the other parties' lists! This happened in 2011, when Parliament had 1 extra seat (121 instead of 120) to compensate for the fact that the Māori Party only earned 2 seats from the party votes but had 3 candidates win their local electorate races! This rule of an extra party seat (given to another party) helped dilute this over-representation of the Māori Party. You can understand this at a personal level by imagining that these 3 regions' voters really liked the 3 individuals for representing their regions' specific interests (locally-important domestic issues), but generally didn't like the Māori Party's goals for the country as a whole.
